Mediterranean Food Evening (14 photos)
More than 60 people enjoyed an evening sampling 10 different meals created by church members from recipes originating in countries bordering the Mediterranean sea, including Greece, Morocco, Tunisia, Italy and more. Church funds benefited by £900.

There was a good attendance at this year's Carol Service, which used the alternative 7 lessons and carols instead of the more usual 9 lessons and carols version. It was good to have six readings from Luke for a change.
Mulled wine, mince pies and cakes were much enjoyed with chat after the service!
Musicality Concert (6 photos)
The "Musicality" ensemble gave a very enjoyable and entertaining concert in St Matthews Church on 6th December 2019. The church was almost full, and both the audience and singers were treated to a free glass of wine or or soft drink on arrival, followed by an extensive buffet of food at the interval. The church also had an attractive display of Christmas trees of various sorts and sizes, decorated in different ways by both individuals and groups.
Induction Service (5 photos)
Rev Stephen Hanscombe was inducted as Vicar of Leyburn with Bellerby at a Service lead by Bishop of Ripon Dr Helen-Ann Hartley in St Matthews Church on Ist October 2019. The church was full, and all present enjoyed a happy and uplifting service, followed by an extensive buffet provided by the congregations of both St Matthews and St John's.
Eastern Promise meal (20 photos)
Over 60 people attended the annual themed meal- in 2018 this was Eastern Promise. There were nine different meals on offer, some very spicy and others not, so there was something to suit everyone. Of course, most people tried several, if not all! Over £850 was raised for church funds
Wine % Cheese Evening 2018 (18 photos)
54 people enjoyed a range of cheeses including 7 different ones from Wensleydale Creamery, plus a Stilton and a Brie. Several red and white wines went well with the cheese, the first glass being free with the ticket.
Steve Akrill kindly produced a memory taxing quiz which everyone enjoyed while learning a few facts!

Medieval Banquet Bolton Castle (15 photos)
St Matthews fundraising team organised a medieval banquet at Bolton Castle and around 50 people attended, many in period costume. All enjoyed an excellent meal provided by Sue Fairhurst's team, followed by appropriate music on a harp.
Rev Michael was dressed as a monk and was challenged to wear the outfit to church the following morning. He agreed only if he was sponsored and it raised over £100. It did, so he was obliged to take morning service at both St John's and St Mathew's in costume!
St matthew's Curry evening (4 photos)
The curry evening arranged at the Golden lion on 14/6/18 was a total sell out! 50 people filled the room and enjoyed either a chicken curry or beef lasagne.
The quiz had a distinct French flavour about it, no doubt due to Gisele's influence, so it was probably no surprise that the Binks table, including their French daugter-in Law, Juliet, won!
An excellent raffle followed the meal.

Around 20 people enjoyed beautiful weather while walking round Bellerby, praying and singing hymns at various spots, lunch at Wrenscar, thanks to Joyce Langley, and the Rogation Service in the afternoon.

Rev Michael Hepper conducted the annual Sunrise service on Penhill on Easter Day 2108. 14 hardy souls,and a couple of dogs, climbed Penhill in the snow and dark to enjoy the 30 min service. Unfortunately the top was in cloud so no sun was seen!

Dishes of the Americas 2017 (48 photos)
The 2017 themed evening was food from anywhere in the Americas. It was a sellout, with over 70 attendees. The volunteer cooks from both the congregation and other villagers had created eight different dishes and a similar number of desserts, such as Key Lime Pie, Mississippi mud pie etc.
Derek had produced a Quiz, once more, before becoming too ill. Unfortunately, he passed away the previous evening. Joyce very courageously gave the answers.
Over £1,000 was raised for St John's church funds.

Three new Lay Worship Leaders were commissioned at St Mathew's on 29th October 2017 by Rev Michael Hepper, with the help of Rev Ruth Newton. The three were Carol Monk, Alison Hunt and Sylvia Schofield.
Pet Service 2017 (4 photos)
The annual Pet Service at St Matthew's attracted a variety of pets, Which Rev Michael blessed during the service.
The hen is a Rhode Island Red from Chicken Chat at Kirkwood Hall. This is for therapy for those with early dementia and the group meets on a Monday morning

Over 60 people attended this year's Wine & Cheese evening despite some regulars being on holiday. Derek again compiled a challenging and enjoyable quiz.
Bellerby Harvest Lunch 2017 (14 photos)
Almost 40 villagers attended an excellent Harvest lunch of casseroles and apple crumble/pies with cream. This was followed by Bellerby favourite hyms accompanied by 11 members of the Leyburn Band.
Paul Winstanley, Diocesan Stewardship advisor brought a jigsaw of a collage made from photos taken of the parish's activities over the years. All present were given pieces of the jigsaw to fit after lunch.

There were fewer people attending this year due to illnesses or holidays, but those who did take part thoroughly enjoyed the day, whether they attended all three parts- walking round the village, praying and singing hymns at various spots, lunch at the Cross Keys, and the Rogation Service in the afternoon, or parts of it.

Dishes of the World evening (8 photos)
This year's themed food evening was open to food from anywhere in the world. This resulted in 9 separate dishes from 8 different countries, all of which were much appreciated by the 70 attendees. The volunteer cooks amongst the congregation had also provided delicious desserts, and there was also a cheese board.
Derek again produced a testing Quiz which gave entertainment and amusement.
All in all another very successful fundraising event. What do we do next year?
Hymns & Pimms at St John's (4 photos)
To celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday, people were invited to St John's church to enjoy Pimms while singing favourite hymns chosen on the day by the attending congregation. A fruit punch was provide for those not wishing to have the Pimms while a range of cakes, biscuits and also bowls of red white and blue fruit were also available. Frank kindly played the organ.
Attendance was disappointing, but those who did come thoroughly enjoyed themselves!
Thanksgiving Service for Tom B (2 photos)
Tom Ball, publican at Cross Keys, died suddenly. His funeral took place in Saltburn so it was decided to have a thanksgiving service in Bellerby, followed by a bring & share lunch. This was very well attended. A generous amount of food was brought, and Geoff and Carl, of Wensleydale Brewery in Bellerby, very kindly gave a barrel of beer.

Christingle 2015 (14 photos)
St Matthew's Church felt almost full for the 2015 Christingle Service held on Christmas Eve. Certainly, there were at least 75 people attending, a majority being children!

Mothers U Celebrates 130 years (7 photos)
Eight members of Leyburn and Bellerby Mothers’ union attended an enjoyable service at Ripon Cathedral to celebrate 130 years of the M U in the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds, and lay up that banner, as we move forward into the new Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales on Jan 1st. We were welcomed by the Dean, Bishop James preached and our Diocesan Chaplain presided. Our banner was carried with pride amongst all the others and candles were carried to the M U Chapel representing each branch. At the end of the service everyone enjoyed tea, cake and chat. We all also took a cake and brought home one from another branch, ours from our one time linked branch, Horsforth, which will be shared at our monthly Cuppa and Chat morning on Tuesday.
Spanish Evening (39 photos)
The 2015 themed evening, this year Spanish, was again a sellout. Despite most of the congregation not being familiar with cooking Spanish food, the results of using various recipes were spectacularly good.

Derek and Joyce presented a difficult but entertaining quiz, then encouraged those from Durham to sing the Lambton Worm with the rest joining in the chorus.

Rev Michael Hepper and three other vicars, together with lay enthusiasts from the newly formed West Yorkshire and the Dales Motor Cycle Club, have set off on a 725 miles pilgrimage to Iona.

Pancake evening 2015 (1 photo)
Shrove Tuesday was celebrated with an array of pancakes, with both sweet and savoury fillings. Around 50 people attended and had a very enjoyable evening.

Italian Evening (7 photos)
Bellerby Memorial Hall was filled to capacity for St John's 2014 Theme evening, so much so that a number of villagers were disappointed because they did not buy tickets before they were all sold!
Anne Wheatley was ably helped by several members of the congregation and also some non churchgoers to provide a variety of excellent Italian food. Italian wine, music, and a quiz on Italy (compiled by Rev Michael), complemented the food to create a very enjoyable evening.
Pilgrim series (2 photos)
A series of informal gatherings, involving a meal, discussion of the basic beliefs of Christianity, followed by a short service, are being held at St Matthew's Church on Sunday evenings. The second included a Teize service.
There are about 20 regular attendees, from both St Matthew's and St John's congregations.

There was a very good turnout of people to Beat the Bounds in Bellerby in May 2014. This was despite a very poor weather forecast. Their faith was rewarded by sunshine for most of the walk!
Members of the congregations of both St John's and St Matthew's, and a few from neither, enjoyed the walk, with prayers and hymns at 11 separate locations, followed by an excellent lunch at the Cross Keys pub. As a result, the Rogation Service at St John's started 45 minutes late!

on 10th March 2014, Mothers’ Union Diocesan President, Ros Dobbin, came to speak to the Leyburn branch meeting and Carol Leaman presented her with cheques for the Diocese MU and AFIA (Away From It All) fund which provides holidays for needy families in the Ripon and Leeds M U caravan at Filey.

Dorothy Walker, who was organist at St John's for over 70 years, was 108 years old this week. She still attends our coffee mornings and the occasional special Service.
New Bishop! (2 photos)
Civic dignataries and members of the clergy welcomed the first Area Bishop of Leeds and Diocesan Bishop of West Yorkshire and the Dales, The Rt. Revd Nick Baines. Bishop Baines is currently Diocesan Bishop of Bradford. “Let’s walk this new journey together as we forge new friendships, cross old boundaries, and shape a vision for this new Diocese,” he said. “I am excited by what lies ahead for us.” On 20th April, 2014, the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales will be created. The new diocese will be one of the most populous in the Church of England, bringing together the three cities of Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield and key towns such as Huddersfield and Harrogate. On Pentecost Sunday, 8th June, 2014, the Inauguration and Confirmation of Election of the Diocesan Bishop for the new diocese will take place at 4pm in York Minster.

Christingle 2013 (8 photos)
A Christingle and Crib Service was held at St Matthew's on behalf of the whole benefice on Sunday 22nd December.
The Christingle was in aid of The Children’s Society which supports vulnerable children across the U.K.
The service was well-attended and the children each received balloons and three gifts (to mirror those of the wise men) as well as enjoying cakes and biscuits at the end. Mums, Dads, Grandparents and Godparents tucked into mince pies and mulled wine so a good time was had by all.

This event, on the 1st Friday in December 2013, is the third year it has been held and now seems established as an annual occurence that is much appreciated, particularly by stall holders on a cold winter's morning!

34 people attended the Soup & Spud evening in bellerby Memorial Hall on 12th November. This was fewer than expected for various reasons, but those who did come thoroughly enjoyed the selection of soups, baked potatoes and toppings, wine and soft drinks.

Another very sucessful Wine & Cheese evening was held in the Memorial Hall in September with almost 60 people attending. Cheese was donated by Wensleydale Creamery, courtesy of Richard Clarke, and by a Welsh Creamery, courtesy of Lewis Peace whose son is a director.
Rev Michael's Pilgrimage (101 photos)
Rev Michael Hepper has recently been made Area Dean and has just completed a pilgrimage, visiting all 50 places of worship across the deanery of Wensley.
Starting his walk on August 20th at St Mary and St John's Hardraw, Rev Hepper finishes at St Lambert's in Burneston two weeks and nearly 100 miles later!
At each stop, Michael held a short service with whoever was there to greet him

Rev Michael Hepper ran a Church stall at this year's Wensleydale Show, helped by his wife, Gisele, daughter, Emily, and members of both congregations. The bran tub was appreciated by children!
St Matthew's Cake Stall (4 photos)
Members of St. Matthew's congregation produced a good variety of cakes and jams which attracted plenty of custom in Leyburn Market Place and raised £206 for church funds. The Vicar, who also did some of the baking, said how pleased he was with the success of the stall. Picture shows Margaret Taylor, ( the Market Superintendent) and Olive Wilkinson, (one of the Church Wardens) putting the final touches to the display.
St Matthews Reordering 2 (9 photos)
A second consultation for St Matthews re-ordering was held in the church on 4th July. The model church was made by Mr. David Fawcett, Faculty Leader of Arts and Design. Punch was served after the meeting

Rev Michael, Gisele and members of St John's congregation got up very early to take a car load of varied bric a brac to the car boot sale at Bedale. A new experience for everyone but the weather was perfect, the sales went well and we made £255

The Oak Room at Thornborough Hall was filled to overflowing for the first Filling Station Meeting in Leyburn.
Richard Fothergill, who began the very first Filling Station in the country, travelled all the way from Bath to give an inspirational talk.
Beating the Bounds 2013 (16 photos)
About 30 people enjoyed beating the bounds of Bellerby this year. Hymns were sung, readings read and prayers said a 11 significant places in the village, finishing in the Cross Keys pub where a final prayer and blessing was given, followed by Sunday lunch.
Many then took part in a Rogationtide Service in St John's Church, lead by Rev Michael Hepper, with John Kiberd playing the organ.

St Matthew's Re-ordering Consultation (5 photos)
Around 60 people enjoyed wine and cheese before taking part in a consultation meeting to discuss proposals on how to develop St Matthew's Church.
Rev Michael Hepper explained that he and the PCC wished to develop the church so it could provide facilities for the whole community, but wanted to involve the community in the planning.
Architect Steven Calvert presented some possible plans, including quite radical changes to the Church. He asked the audience to move into small groups and create a list of ideas for the changes. These were then gathered and he attempted to collate and summarise them.
A further meeting will be held on 4th July. In the meantime people are encouraged to put comments and ideas on the "Contact Us" page of this website
Easter Egg Hunt 2013 (3 photos)
This year's Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Monday was again successful, though some of the eggs disappeared in the snow. Tea and cake was even more welcome!
Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday 2013 (9 photos)
More than 40 people attended a pancakes, crepes, and mulled wine evening on Shrove Tuesday. All had a very enjoyable evening, while the raffle and donations box made a useful addition to church funds.
Epiphany Celebration 2013 (4 photos)
Epiphany was celebrated with a special Service, followed by the congregation receiving a slice of Galette des Rois (a French Epiphany cake) made by Rev Michael Hepper himself!
Chris was lucky and ate the slice with a hidden item so was crowned "King" and was able to then choose Anne as his "Queen".

Some of St John's congregation enjoyed a joint Service at St Matthew's in which Rev Hepper was greatly helped by the hilarious, yet thought provoking, antics of Roly the Clown.
Roly Bain is a full-time, freelance professional clown, and an Anglican priest. His clowning is rooted in the Gospel, and his thought-provoking and entertaining presentation of Gospel themes never fails to provoke a profound response.
Magical Tea Party (12 photos)
A Tea Party with attending Magician was enjoyed by over 50 people, a quarter of whom were none church goers. A Decorated Hat competition produced a number of innovative hats.
Art Exhibition (10 photos)
An exhibition of art by local artists was held in the Church during the Bellerby Village Open Gardens Day. A number of paintings were sold.
Tea/coffee and scones were served during the day by Joyce and Anne
Olympic Torch Relay (10 photos)
Rev michael Hepper and members of both congregations had a stall in Leyburn Market Place to provide drinks to children while they waited and watched the Olympic Torch Relay pass through.
It was a lovely sunny day and Leyburn Primary children then went up on the Shawl for a picnic.
Jubilee Beacon (16 photos)
Parishes throughout the UK were encouraged to light beacons at 10.20pm on June 4th.
Rev Michael Hepper bought a gas fired beacon and a small group of parishioners helped him set it up high up in one of Harry Petty's fields.
More than 40 people turned up in the evening and were welcomed into the home of Harry and Andelene Petty for sherry and nibbles before walking up their field to the beacon.
Once the beacon was lit, everyone enjoyed mulled wine and warm pasties as they watched fireworks.
The beacons on Penhill and East Witton could be seen.
Thanks to Richard Sanderson for generously donating the gas for the beacon.

Mothers Union Relaunch (6 photos)
On 20th May 2012 St. Matthew's, Leyburn, welcomed a packed church to relaunch the Leyburn and Bellerby branch of the Mothers' Union.

Playgroup Party (4 photos)
Rev Michael Hepper organised a party for the children attending the weekly Mothers and Toddlers group. This included a magician who was very entertaining. The children then enjoyed a party meal provided by the Vicar and members of St John's congregation.
Beating the Bounds in Bellerby (32 photos)
More than 40 members of both St John's and St Matthew's congregations and Bellerby villagers enjoyed a traditional Beating of the Bounds of Bellerby on 6th May 2012. Starting at St John's Church, Rev Michael Hepper lead the group in prayers and hymns while visiting key places in the village. All then had lunch at the Cross keys Inn, followed by a Rogationtide Service in Church.
Liz Spairey provided musical accompaniment with a recorder during the Beating, while John Kiberd played the organ at the Church.
The weather was perfect and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day.
